6 Simple Ways to Naturally Whiten Your Teeth at Home

Yellowing of teeth does not necessarily indicate poor oral hygiene, but people often think so. Many people even suffer from self-esteem problems due to their teeth colour. Some people even perform expensive tooth whitening procedures just to enhance their self-image. However, you don’t have to break the bank to whiten your teeth. You can make your teeth whiter by using some effective ingredients that are lying around your home.

There are various ways to improve the appearance of your teeth. Here are some tips:-

  1. Regular Dental Cleanings

Tartar, also known as Calculus, can give your teeth a yellowish appearance. Fortunately, with help of dental cleaning, you can get rid of these deposits.

How often should I go for cleaning? Ideally once every 6 months should go for a dental check-up and if he recommends then should go for cleaning of teeth. In this way, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy.

  1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is the traditional method used by Indians to whiten teeth. This technique is also said to improve your overall oral health and hygiene.

To do oil pulling, you need to grind the oil in your mouth. Any oil can be used for oil pulling, but sunflower oil and sesame oil are the most commonly used. Coconut oil is a popular option because it tastes good and has other health benefits too.

Oil pulling is useful as it helps remove many types of bacteria from the mouth. These bacteria cause plaque and make your teeth look yellow. Therefore, oil pulling can be helpful in your tooth whitening search.

  1. Dietary Changes

You can prevent further stains by removing food that leaves marks on your teeth. Foods and drinks that contain tannins, such as wine and tea, can stain your teeth. Coffee, dark soda, and juice can also discolour.

Acidic foods can make your teeth look yellow by abrading the enamel of your teeth. People who care about tooth colour should avoid excessive intake of citrus fruits, coffee and soda pop. Or, you should always brush your teeth after taking them.

Dentists generally recommend waiting 30 minutes after consuming citrus food or drinks, before brushing your teeth. Acid can weaken the enamel of the teeth, so premature brushing can damage the enamel of the teeth.

  1. Brush with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste

Baking soda has the property of whitening teeth. That’s why it’s so widely used in toothpaste advertising. It is slightly abrasive and helps to scrape off dirt on the tooth surface. Hydrogen peroxide, on the other hand, is a natural bleach. It also helps kill bacteria. For years, people have used hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria in wounds.

What would you get if you could make toothpaste from two substances? The perfect tooth whitening solution! Take 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Mix the two contents to get a paste. Brush your teeth  with this paste.  You won’t get super shiny teeth in a single session but it will remove the loose stains or marks from the teeth  if you use this paste two to three times a week.

  1. Maintaining proper oral hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the most important thing a person can do to reduce yellowing of teeth.

Regular brushing and flossing  protects  the teeth, prevent gum deterioration and removes dirt.

 Good oral hygiene includes:
  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily. You should also always clean your gums and the front  and back of your teeth.
  • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride can fight and even reverse tooth decay. Though some people oppose using fluoride, dentists believe that fluoride is safe and beneficial for teeth.
  • Flossing to remove plaque between the teeth.

  1. Whitening with fruit

The enzymes papain and bromelain contained in papaya and pineapple, respectively, help whiten teeth.

A 2012 study found preliminary evidence that solutions containing these ingredients could have a modest weight reduction effect. However, the authors of the study warn that more research is needed to determine if these enzymes are effective.

Final Verdict:

Few people naturally have white teeth but with age their teeth turn yellow . However, good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations can contribute to shiny , sparkling teeth.

Natural remedies can help people whiten their teeth at home ,though dentists can always provide professional teeth whitening safely.
